Lost in Music- Northern Soul

An Interiors Project inspired by the Northern Soul movement and music of the 70s. A live project brief given by Milliken Europe to create a collection inspired by the history of Wigan (where their HQ is based) for a local College. As well as interiors we were also specified to create three different carpet tile families to complement the other textiles we designed for.

Initial Photography inspired by Strobe lighting and contemporary Club culture

Through painting and mark making, honed in on creating different and interesting textures to emulate the movement of Northern Soul such as dance movement and vigorous motions, foot sweeps on the dance floor and old interior elements of the Wigan Casino.

Final Pieces Included (L to R): Screenprinting on Vinyls, inspired by lyrical and musical motifs and elements as well as typography and asemic writing to reflect movement.Visualised as an art display. Digital Placement print inspired by playful textures, movement and collaging. Typographic typography rug.

Final Pieces Included (L to R): Plaster cast marbled tiles for back splash of Cafe. Inspired by abstracted shapes and typographic qualities as well as movement from the marbling. Co-ordinate Print inspired by mark making to music and music sheets, visualised for seating area. Statement print emulated through collage inspired by various themes in the project, such as strobe lighting, vinyl shapes, Northern Soul posters and texture. Carpet inspired by strobe lighting and herringbone effect.

Final Pieces Included (Top to Bottom): Digital Fabric inspired by asemic writing. Wallpaper inspired by collaging and urban textures of the Wigan Casino. Carpet tiles inspired by abstracted motion and movement of the Northern Soul dancing.
